On May 8th the University of Oregon fraternity, Alpha Theta Pi hosted its fifth annual Ms. Greek Pageant benefiting Mothers Against Drunk Driving. This year’s fundraising efforts also included support for the Brian Reams Foundation. Brian was an Alpha Theta Pi fraternity brother who was killed by a drunk driver in March of 2007.
Every year the philanthropic event is put on by Beta Theta Pi to benefit MADD. In total the group raised over $20,000 for MADD this year. T-shirt sales gleaned another $3,000 for the Brian Reams Foundation that will go to build a recreational basketball court and a tribute to Brian outside the Beta Theta Phi fraternity house.
It was a record breaking year and organizer Devin Lindquist did a remarkable job and his heart was obviously connected to the cause. This year, all nine sororities elected one representative from their house to compete in the pageant-like competition. The contestants were: Manisha Marberry from Alpha Chi Omega, Simone Walter from Alpha Phi, Whitney Boyer from Chi Omega, Margaret Maletis from Delta Gamma, Claire Stanton of Kappa Kappa Gamma, Kalina Kukslinka from Kappa Delta, Kari Burgess from Gamma Phi Beta, Ashley Moore from Pi Beta Phi and Kaitlin Robinson from Sigma Mu Omega.
Fundraising efforts by the contestants began in late January and the record breaking goal this year astounded the MADD representatives that participated as pageant judges. Each of the nine women was required to begin the competition with a display of one of her talents. The evening also included a presentation by MADD and victim/survivor of drunk driving, Joanna Zimmerman. Ms. Greek 2008 went to Claire Stanton from Kappa Kappa Gamma. Congratulations to all contestants and organizer, Devin Lindquist for such a display of talent and heart to help MADD in its life saving mission.
